Safe Content Manager: AI-Powered Image Moderation Platform

Overview

Safe Content Manager is an AI-driven image moderation platform designed to automatically detect unsafe or sensitive content. It provides a clean dashboard for uploading, analyzing, reviewing, and managing images to ensure platform safety and compliance. Built for reliability, accuracy, and seamless moderation workflows.

Features

  • AI-powered image moderation using OpenAI Vision API
  • Real-time content analysis
  • Secure file uploads
  • Moderation dashboard
  • Flagged content management
  • Risk scoring & detailed breakdown
  • Clean and responsive UI
  • Role-ready architecture for future expansion

Why I Built This

I wanted a fast and reliable way to moderate visual content using AI. This project solves the pain of manually checking images and simplifies large-scale moderation with automation.

Technical Stuff

Frontend

The frontend focuses on speed, accessibility, and clean UI:

  • React.js + Next.js: Hybrid rendering + smooth navigation
  • TypeScript: Strong typing for fewer runtime issues
  • Tailwind CSS + Shadcn UI: Beautiful, consistent, scalable UI components
  • React Query (optional): Smooth server state handling
  • Dropzone + FileReader: For secure and user-friendly uploads

Backend

The backend is designed for reliable AI processing and safe media handling:

  • Next.js API Routes: Serverless functions for moderation pipelines
  • OpenAI API: For high-accuracy image safety analysis
  • Edge-friendly functions: Fast and scalable
  • Secure upload validations: MIME checks, size restrictions
  • Structured response system: Severity, categories, flags

AI Moderation Flow

Image Intake & Validation

  • User uploads an image
  • File is validated (type, size, corruption check)
  • Processed and sent to the OpenAI Vision API

Moderation Pipeline

  • AI returns a breakdown of unsafe categories
  • Each category is mapped to severity levels
  • The system generates:
    • A global risk score
    • Category flags
    • Human-readable summary
    • Original AI metadata

Review Dashboard

  • Images appear in an analytics-first dashboard
  • Unsafe items are highlighted
  • Users can filter, inspect, and manage content

Admin Dashboard Features

The project includes a clean internal dashboard:

  • Upload new images
  • View moderation results
  • Inspect AI metadata
  • Manage flagged content
  • Sort/filter by severity score

Technical Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Integrating AI Moderation Accurately

  • Problem: Producing reliable, consistent safety scores
  • Solution: Implemented normalized scoring + category mapping layer

Challenge 2: Handling Large Files Securely

  • Problem: Users uploading heavy or unsafe files
  • Solution: Added strict validation + memory-safe handling

Challenge 3: Fast Real-time Updates

  • Problem: Displaying results instantly without lag
  • Solution: Optimized fetch flows + lightweight state management

Performance Optimizations

  • Edge functions for fast response times
  • Image previews rendered client-side
  • Reduced unnecessary re-renders
  • Cached moderation lookups (optional)
  • Lightweight UI components

Future Technical Improvements

  • Add role-based access control
  • Add history analytics with charts
  • Support bulk image moderation
  • Add queue-based job processing
  • Connect to cloud storage (S3, Supabase Storage)
  • Add text/OCR moderation
  • Full audit-logging
